Sundar Pichai
Pichai Sundararajan, known as Sundar Pichai, is an Indian–American business executive and the CEO of Alphabet Inc. and Google. He is known for his leadership in developing Chrome, expanding Android globally, and driving Google’s AI transformation.
Born in Madurai, Tamil Nadu, he rose from a modest background to become one of the most influential technology leaders in the world.
Early Life and Education
[edit | edit source]Sundar Pichai was born on 10 June 1972 in Madurai, Tamil Nadu. His father worked as an electrical engineer, and his mother was a stenographer.
He grew up in Chennai, where he showed strong academic abilities. After completing his schooling, he earned a degree in Metallurgical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur.
Encouraged by his professors, he moved to the United States for higher education, completing:
- M.S. in Materials Science and Engineering from Stanford University
- MBA from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, where he was recognized as a Siebel Scholar and Palmer Scholar
Career
[edit | edit source]Before joining Google, Pichai worked at Applied Materials and later at McKinsey & Company.
At Google
[edit | edit source]Pichai joined Google in 2004. His early work included the Google Toolbar, which made Google Search more accessible. He later proposed creating a new browser, which led to the launch of **Google Chrome** in 2008. Chrome soon became the world’s most used web browser.
He later oversaw:
- Chrome OS
- Gmail
- Google Drive
- Google Maps
- Android OS (from 2013 onward)
His strong product leadership made him a central figure within the company.
CEO of Google & Alphabet
[edit | edit source]In 2015, he was appointed CEO of Google following the creation of Alphabet Inc. In 2019, after Larry Page and Sergey Brin stepped down from active leadership, Pichai became CEO of Alphabet as well.
